For those not in the know or stuck in a linux world without even thinking about a .exe, utorrent is an amazing little torrent application that is easy on resources all around. I’ve struggled with gnome-btdownload, bittornado, ktorrent, azureus, bittorrent (official), and any other incarnation I’ve found on freshmeat or sourceforge. Nothing quite compares to utorrent. Azureus comes close, but it’s resource usage kills me. The wonderful thing is that utorrent is pretty easy to get running in a linux environment and specifically Ubuntu 6.06 “Dapper Drake”
Step one: Download wine. We need wine to run the windows executable. With Dapper, it’s as easy as adding a new line with deb http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt dapper main to your /etc/apt/sources.list, and running sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install wine from a terminal
Step two: Download utorrent.exe
Step Three: run “wine ~/utorrent.exe” assuming you’ve downloaded utorrent to your home directory
Step Four: Use your bandwidth to help distribute Linux to everyone around the world
Update: Step Six: Profit!
